- Steve Goerger

SoCal Earth is an environmental data program created by the Robert Redford Conservancy at Pitzer College. The conservancy requested that I design the visual identity for this new program, which was to launch as a website first. Besides appealing to Southern Californians, the conservancy emphasized the importance of communication resourcefulness through design.
When thinking of how to create a visual identity around an abstraction like "resourcefulness", I decided to make the abstraction more literal. Seeing that I had loose pieces of construction paper in my studio, I cut the logo and illustrations out of these pieces of paper. I was designing SoCal Earth around one of its main philosophies; using what we already have available to us.
Tons of collages of cut paper and pencil drawings were digitized, cleaned and polished, and made into the graphics for SoCal Earth. This held true for all the graphics on the site, as well as the kid's Burrowing Owl mascot, Ollie. To get the full experience, visit socalearth.org
