What do Paris and Los Angeles have in common?

This was a question that plagued me when I was designing a poster for the Paris 2024 Cultural Olympiad. In Spring of 2024, I entered a student contest to design a poster and animation celebrating the transition of the Summer Olympics from Paris in 2024 to Los Angeles in 2028. This was a contest held between three art schools in the Los Angeles area and one in Paris. Despite the cities of Paris and Los Angeles feeling radically different, I had to design something that unified them.

When thinking of these cities, I realized both were massive tourist cities. With tourist cities come cheap souvenir stores. I saw that I could highlight these two cities by elevating plastic Eiffel Towers and faux Academy Awards into symbols of pride. Using a unifying mid-century cut paper style, an Eiffel Tower, an Olympic torch, and an Academy Award were combined to create a poster of transition between cities.
